Fourth Week 9/19

We finalized our designs for our kitten tower and discussed dimensions and project costs. Our ideas on how our team would lock the modular pieces were also finalized.

Our final design plans run as follows:

  • Our Tetris design will be measured in square units of 1 sq. ft each
  • The thickness (z- axis) of each modular unit will also be 1 ft
    • The base Tetris unit is 4 x 1, taking up 4 sq. units
    • The left Tetris unit is 2 x 3, taking up 4 sq. units
    • The right Tetris unit is 3 x 2, taking up 4 sq. units
  • Each Tetris unit will be held in place by static, non-moveable pegs

With materials and creative design:

  • All Tetris units will be built with  ½ inch planks of plywood
  • Holes will be sawed out for kittens to travel between Tetris units
  • Before applying epoxy, each individual Tetris unit will receive a unique paint color
  • All Tetris units will be covered in a  ¼ to  ½ inch think layer of epoxy resin
    • The epoxy resin is non-porous and dries without any crevices for dirt to be trapped in

In total, the amount of plywood necessary for building the cat tower will be 42 square feet. However, we agreed on buying 50 square feet so the extra can be used for testing epoxy resin on.
