Awards & Acknowledgments

  • Congratulations to Amber Mahler and Casey Lightford who each were recognized with an award at this year’s regional housing conference. Amber received the SWACUHO Mid-level Professional of Distinction Award and Casey received the Bob Cooke Award. Both awards recognize excellence and a commitment to student service in the recipient’s role at their respective housing departments.
  • Congratulations to Chelsea Villareal from the Dean of Students office and Dr. Beverly Williams of the Student Counseling Center, who recently were honored as fall 2022 CARE Award recipients. The CARE Awards, which stands for Celebrate Achievement, Reward Excellence, recognize staff who have demonstrated superior performance, offered outstanding customer service and performed acts that have enhanced the image of the university.
  • Asiah Claiborne, assistant director for student life programs, is this year’s staff recipient of the 2023 Women Leading in Diversity Awards, hosted by the Galerstein Gender Center.
  • Ashley Shoemake, assistant director of the Student Union, has completed her yearlong appointment on the Association of College Unions International 2023 Annual Conference Planning Team. Ashley was one of only 10 professionals in the nation to be appointed to the team.

Vice President for Student Affairs

  • March 7: Student Affairs division meeting, 10:30 a.m., SSA Auditorium. All staff are expected to attend, unless otherwise cleared by a supervisor or due to office responsibilities.

Athletics

  • March 10: Men’s and women’s tennis vs. Ozarks, 2 p.m., tennis courts.
  • March 10: Softball vs. Ozarks, 5/7 p.m., softball field.
  • March 11: Softball vs. Ozarks, noon/2 p.m., softball field.

Dean of Students

  • Services and activities for the week of Feb. 20: Students referred for BAIT (14), academic dishonesty (7). Student/staff meetings (12), hearings (2), dean’s certifications (4).

Health & Wellness Initiatives

Counseling Center

  • March 7: Chow with the CSR, 1 p.m., Dining Hall West.
  • March 8: Midterm De-Stress, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., SU first floor.
  • Comet Chat, 20-minute, informal drop-in mental health consultations for students, are offered in-person and online.
  • Center for Students in Recovery activities for the week of Feb. 20: 12-Step (1), Nourish (4), Creative Recovery (8), Stillness Meditation (4), Processing Recovery (1).

Health Center

  • April 5: Free vision and dental screenings, Galaxy Room C, by appointment only. Contact the center to schedule, 972-883-2747.

Wellness Center

  • It’s time again to sign up to raise funds and awareness for the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk supported by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Money raised by UT Dallas walking teams will be used toward suicide prevention efforts in North Texas, to raise awareness about mental health resources, and to create unity among the Comet family and local communities. There’s no fee or fundraising requirement to attend, but individuals who raise $250 and teams that raise $500 by March 20 will have their name added to the back of the event T-shirt, and if you raise $100 or more by then, you’ll get a free T-shirt. Fundraising, if you choose to do so, can continue until May 29, one month past the walk date. The UTD walk is planned for Saturday, April 29, 10:30 a.m.-noon beginning on the SU Mall/Plinth. To join the Student Affairs team, visit the AFSP website, then select “Register Now” and enter your contact information. Next select “Join a Team” and search for UT Dallas Student Affairs. Once registered, you can share the walk website and the link with anyone interested in donating to the cause. Contact Kacey Sebeniecher with questions.
