Children At Risk

Children at Risk is a nonprofit organization that strives to promote the general welfare of children affected by high risk, low socio-economic status environments by means of research and data collection, legislative influence, and public education. They invest their efforts most prominently areas of parenting, early childhood education, Health education, expanding learning opportunities, and human trafficking. Their vision is to further the equity of the general public by advancing the lifestyles of those most affected by these adverse development conditions.

The Legislative Session

The Texas legislative session is Children at Risk’s opportunity to present their findings and argue for the case of Texas Children who are truly at risk. With the aid of professionals who’s disciplines range from law to social work to computer science, Children at Risk has equipped itself with the tools to influence public policy in a direction that can truly cause change in the lives of disadvantaged children.

Our Role

This 2017 Spring semester, EPICS, Engineering projects in Community Service, at the University of Texas at Dallas has granted us the opportunity to aid Children at Risk in their presentation at the next legislative session. Our team has been given the task of developing a heat map that will illustrate the socio-economic status of all Texas regions, from workforce board to county to zip code, along with other risk factors that would adversely affect the rearing of Texas children. This heat map will serve as a method of streamlining communication between Children at Risk and Texas legislatures so that the most essential information necessary can be delivered quickly and efficiently.
