In Memoriam

Aiken, Carlos
Dr. Aiken enjoyed applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to geology and geophysics.

Carter, James
Dr. Carter’s interests involved five basic areas: lunar and extraterrestrial resources; upper mantle and lower crustal studies of the Earth; geochemical exploration and ore deposits; environmental geochemistry; and K-T boundary and Late Cretaceous sauropod dinosaurs.

Presnall, Dean
His research focused on understanding how magma, which feeds volcanoes, is formed by the melting of Earth’s mantle. He helped design and build equipment that could replicate these conditions, including a multi-anvil hydraulic press which reproduces temperatures and pressures as deep as 500 miles below the Earth’s surface.

Rutford, Robert H.
Dr. Rutford’s research interests were in the area of glacial geology and geomorphology, primarily in Antarctica. The glacial history of that continent is of particular interest. Current activities focus more on science policy and the interactions between scientists and politicians as the Antarctic Treaty System continues to develop and evolve. President Emeritus
