Jumpstart your career with hands-on healthcare experience

All Jindal School of Management students must perform an internship to graduate. A healthcare internship can help you gain valuable work experience while assessing which area of healthcare is right for you. Visit the Career Management Center (CMC) for helpful information and links to UT Dallas internships.

Why do I need to complete a Healthcare Management internship?

At JSOM, every BS in Healthcare Management major is required to complete an internship before graduating. The internship needs to be related to the healthcare industry and must be approved before you start it.

A Healthcare Management internship will assist you in building your resume and establishing your network connections. Students who complete one or more internships prior to graduation have significantly better opportunities in their post-graduation job search.

How do I find a Healthcare Management internship?

There are a tremendous number of opportunities out there. Here are some strategies for finding them:

  • Identify companies that require Healthcare Management roles and check their websites for internship openings
  • Ask the people you meet while volunteering or job shadowing if their companies offer internships
  • Find a contact in your Healthcare Management field and pitch your own internship to them
  • Regularly check Handshake
  • Reach out to people you met at Healthcare Management Association or other events

When you check Handshake or other job search engines, search “healthcare.” You will often find a filter for clinical versus non-clinical, so filter words like “non-healthcare management clinical” “business” or “healthcare administration.” “Healthcare Administration” can include things like marketing in healthcare, administration in a doctor’s office or a diagnostics lab. Other keywords to consider are EHR (electronic health records), medical billing, health clinics, nonprofit health organizations, fundraising, assisted living, nursing homes and home health.

Can I use my current job role as my internship?

If you want to use your job as your internship, this is considered a “special project.” Please check out the CMC page on Special Project Requirements and contact us to work out the details.

What hours are required for each credit tier of internship?

If you are choosing a 3-credit internship, you need to complete 240 hours within one semester and will pay tuition/fees; the 0-credit course has no tuition/fees associated and meets the JSOM graduation requirement (must complete a minimum of 160 hours).

See the breakdown of credits and hours required below. Please note that all hours must be completed within one semester, and you must be enrolled in the internship class (0-3 credits) during the semester in which you complete the internship.

0 credit: 160 hours
1 credit: 160 hours
2 credits: 160 hours
3 credits: 240 hours and above

I have an internship offer letter, now what?

Once you receive an internship offer, you must get it approved on Orion. Watch the video on the JSOM Internships page for instructions. You will be required to upload several documents for approval; find out more information under the “Reporting & Timelines” section of the JSOM Internship page.

Fall 2023 Internship with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas

I wanted to share my wonderful experience being a Volunteer Services/Hospitality intern at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas during my Fall 2023 semester, under the guidance of mentors/preceptors Eesha C. and Sonya M. I am so grateful for this immensely educating opportunity where I gained invaluable insights into hospital operations and volunteer management. My main roles were to deal with seasonal compliance and safety protocols, serving as the point-of-contact for all volunteers, and facilitating events and onboarding processes. When collaborating with my mentors, I developed a profound understanding of the critical role volunteers play in enhancing the patient experience.
